In recent years the popularity of parquet flooring has grown significantly. Traditionally Herringbone flooring was used across the length and breadth of the United Kingdom in school halls and large public spaces. For this reason many people would shudder when you mention parquet flooring as it brings back unpleasant memories of sitting on cold hard floors at school. However times have changed and the elegance and beauty of parquet floors are now very much admired.

European influence

Parquet floors originate from mainland Europe and possibly further afield in Persia but that’s another story. All across Europe fine examples of geometric flooring can be found in chateaux, houses of state and indeed more modest dwellings. The most popular designs being herringbone, pointe de hongrie (chevron), parquet de Versailles and patterns borne from the latter. At long last we are seeing alternatives to herringbone flooring and mosaic parquet flooring and with the extensive range of finishes and effects this ancient style of flooring can compliment every style of interior from cutting edge contemporary to traditional elegance.
